Scanning paper documents with your phone

Plenty of your health history probably still exists on paper — a letter from a specialist, a printed lab result, an old vaccination card. You can turn any of these into a clean, searchable document in Looms using just the camera on your phone.

The quickest way

  • Open My Records and choose to add a new record
  • Select your file, or use your phone to take a photo of the document
  • Give it a clear title, pick the record type and set the date
  • Save — it's now stored, searchable and ready to share

Getting a clean scan

A good photo makes the document far easier to read later. Lay the paper flat on a plain, dark surface in good light, hold the phone directly above it, and make sure all four corners are in frame with no shadow across the text. Many phones have a built-in document-scan mode that flattens and sharpens the page automatically.

Multi-page documents

For anything longer than a single page — a discharge summary or a multi-page report — use your phone's scan feature to combine the pages into one PDF, then upload that single file. Keeping a document together as one record is much tidier than uploading loose photos.

Supported files

Looms accepts common formats including PDF, JPEG and PNG. If a file won't upload, check that it isn't unusually large and that it's one of these formats. Once uploaded, you can organise it by type and tag so it's easy to find alongside the rest of your records.
