Vitamin D affects bone strength, immunity and mood — yet deficiency is extremely common and often silent. Here's how to read your result and what the numbers mean.

Vitamin D quietly supports strong bones, a healthy immune system and steady mood — yet deficiency is one of the most common findings on a routine blood test, and most people who have it feel perfectly fine. If your result has come back low, here's what it actually means and what you can do about it.

What the test measures

The standard test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, usually written as 25(OH)D — the storage form of vitamin D that best reflects your overall status. It's reported either in nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL) or nanomoles per litre (nmol/L), and the two scales look very different, so always check the units on your report.

What the numbers generally mean

Exact cut-offs vary between labs and guidelines, but the broad bands are widely used. Treat these as a rough map, not a verdict — your doctor will interpret them alongside your bone health, symptoms and risk factors.

  • Deficient — clearly low; supplementation is usually recommended
  • Insufficient — below ideal; worth addressing, especially in winter
  • Sufficient — the healthy target range for most adults
  • High — uncommon, and almost always from over-supplementing rather than diet or sun

Why deficiency is so common

Your skin makes vitamin D from sunlight, so levels fall in winter, at higher latitudes, and for anyone who spends most of the day indoors or covers up outside. Darker skin, older age and certain gut conditions also reduce how much you make or absorb. Very few foods contain much vitamin D naturally, which is why diet alone rarely fills the gap.

The symptoms are usually silent

Mild to moderate deficiency often causes no obvious symptoms at all, which is exactly why it's picked up on routine testing rather than because someone felt unwell. More pronounced or long-standing deficiency can contribute to tiredness, aches and bone or muscle weakness — but these are non-specific and have many other causes.

What to do if you're low

Most people correct a low level with a vitamin D supplement at a dose their doctor or pharmacist recommends, along with sensible sun exposure. Don't jump to very high megadoses bought online — more is not better, and it's possible to overdo it. If your level is very low or you have a condition affecting absorption, your doctor may prescribe a specific loading regimen.

When to retest

It usually takes two to three months for a supplement to move your stored level meaningfully, so there's little point retesting sooner. Logging your results over time makes it easy to confirm the level has come up and then settled into range, rather than repeating tests blindly.
